ADVISE AND CONSENT
Film and Discussion
Saturday, September 13, 2008
SPECIAL GUESTS: Advise and Consent star Don Murray and film scholar and Otto Preminger biographer Foster Hirsch will introduce the screening and discuss the fascinating story of the film's production.
ADVISE AND CONSENT (Columbia Pictures, 1962), Otto Preminger's outstanding political drama, was described by one reviewer as a "brisk whirl on the Washington merry-go-round."
The film is based on Allen Drury's novel of the same name which spent 104 weeks on the bestseller lists and garnered the Pulitzer Prize. The story examines the darker side of American politics as a dying President asks the Senate to "advise and consent" on a nominee for Secretary of State, resulting in a variety of tactics including "back-room" deals, blackmail and character assassination.
For the film version, Otto Preminger assembled an all-star cast including Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton, Don Murray, Walter Pidgeon, Peter Lawford, Gene Tierney, Franchot Tone, Lew Ayres, George Grizzard, Inga Swenson, Will Geer, and Burgess Meredith. Betty White even makes an appearance as Senator Bessie Adams. Preminger gained unparalleled access to the Capitol for research and filming. Additionally, the film marked the first time that a gay bar was shown in a major Hollywood production. Upon its release, the movie attracted both supporters and critics, some of whom called the film un-American for its frank portrayal of our political system!
Join us at Cinema Paradiso for a special election-year screening of this riveting political classic.
FREE to FLIFF Members / $5.00 General Admission
SPECIAL THANKSCo-sponsored by The DeSantis Center for Motion Picture Industry Studies at Florida Atlantic University's Barry Kaye College of Business.
