Canada’s cooking falls into two major lines of influence, English and French. As well as other influences from Native populations, Slavic & Scandinavian as well as Chinese specially in Vancouver. Tonight's menu will showcase different dishes such as: Pea Soup, Wild rice pilaf, Ginger beef, Chicken glazed in maple syrup & Blackberry cobbler

Then at 7:30pm from Canada comes the award winning French language film "FAMILIA", introduced by Shelly Isaacs and presented with English subtitles. Following the film. Join Shelly for his post screening commentary.

Wednesday, September 15
Familia
(Canada / 2005 / Directed by Louise Archambault / French with English Subtitles)

Michele, a divorced aerobics instructor with a gambling addiction, loses her job and seeks refuge with a childhood friend, Janine, who lives in a seemingly comfortable middle-class suburban neighborhood. Michele's rebellious teenage daughter, Marguerite, and Janine's shy and reserved daughter, Gabrielle, become friends, leading to unforeseen tensions that force both generations to reassess their values. Familia explores the question of how value systems are passed on from mother to daughter and asks: Is it possible to avoid passing on to our children those traits that we despise in our parents?

Winner - Best First Feature - Toronto Int'l Film Festival

"Familia is a refreshing and insightful look at the relationships of two sets of three generations of women that contemplates the question of whether or not women are genetically bound to be like their mothers." --Ray Bennett, The Hollywood Reporter
