Whole Foods Market Film Series
Sunday, April 18, 2010
If you know anything about Whole Foods Market you’ll know that they love food and love the environment. As part of our celebration of Earth Month, our Coral Springs, Ft. Lauderdale, Plantation and Aventura stores will be hosting the "Let’s Retake Our Plates" Film Series on April 17 and 18. The series, which will be at Cinema Paradiso in downtown Ft. Lauderdale, will focus on films that help people understand their food choices, the inside story on our food, and people who are in support of the food movement.
Prior to each film there will be a Whole Foods Market team member to introduce the films. There will be drawings for Earth friendly prizes before each film begins. There will be a Slow Food Glades to Coast representative in the lobby between films to explain more about our organization.
The films we’ll be showing are:
Saturday, April 17
2:30pm: King Corn/Big River In King Corn two friends move to the heartland of America in order to learn where their food comes from. They plant and harvest corn and then try to follow their crop into the food system where they find answers that in return raise questions. Big River, the follow up to King Corn, has the friends returning to Iowa to find out the environmental impact that the acre of corn they raised has had on the people and places downstream.
4:30pm: Fast Food Nation Fast Food Nation traces the birth of a hamburger through a variety of human stories from the immigrant couple who works in a meat plant to the corporate rep who discovers something about his latest burger invention. As the film goes through a variety of avenues, it reveals a portrait of what America is biting into. Sunday, April 18
12pm: The Garden A 14 acre garden in South Central Los Angeles that was formed after the 1992 riots is at risk of being bulldozed. Watch the struggle between these urban farmers and the city and powerful developer that wants to evict them and build warehouses.
2pm: Food, Inc A revealing look at our country’s food industry, this movie discovers the underbelly of the American food system that has been hidden from consumers with the consent of federal agencies. It also shows how a handful of corporations in control are putting profits over customer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, and the safety of workers and the environment.
The cost to attend each film is $7 and proceeds will be donated to Slow Food Glades to Coast, a non-profit organization that has a pleasure for food along with a commitment to the community and the environment. A local chapter of Slow Food USA, Slow Food Glades to Coast holds workshops, talks and dining events that focus on local sustainability, gathering with family, and better eating for children.
