RETURN OF THE HERO (Le Retour du Heros) Laurent Tirard
France / 2017 / 91 min / French w/English subtitles / Comedy Action Adventure
1809…In Napoleon’s army, the charming Captain Neuville is to marry the naive Pauline when the war breaks out, forcing Neuville to depart for the battlefield. After not hearing from the captain for months, Pauline soon becomes ill with worry. Her sister, Elizabeth, devises a plan to write fake letters on behalf of Neuville thinking he would never come back.
But it all goes south when Neuville reappears.
In 2011, we opened our Festival with a silent black & white French film, starring an actor unknown to most American audience, Jean Dujardin. He went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. Since then he has had some success, but now shines again as the dashing, handsome fraud, Captain Neuville. The always wonderful, Melanie Laurent, plays Elizabeth and holds her own against this megawatt talent.
Writer: Declan May (adaptation), Laurent Tirard (screenplay), Grégoire Vigneron (screenplay) / Producer: Marc Dujardin, Olivia Dugache / Composer: Mathieu Lamboley / Editor: Yann Malcor / Principal Cast: Jean Dujardin, Melanie Laurent / Contact: email@example.com
Director: Laurent grew up admiring American films. He studied film making at New York University, worked as a script reader for Warner Bros. studios, then became a journalist and worked for the French film magazine Studio for six years. There, he conducted a series of interviews on film making which have been published the book Moviemakers’ Master Class: Private Lessons from the World’s Foremost Directors. From Woody Allen to David Cronenberg, the Coen brothers to Lars Von Trier, all film directors run up against the same essential concerns: how to direct actors, for example, or whether to pre-plan camera angles. In interviewing these and 16 other notable filmmakers, Tirard found notable affinities between seemingly dissimilar directors.
In 1997, he left the magazine and began writing scripts, while directing two shorts, in 1999 and 2000. He wrote and directed his first feature, The Story of My Life, in 2004, co-wrote the hugely successful Prête-moi ta main (How to Get Married and Stay Single) for Alain Chabat in 2005, then wrote and directed his second film, Molière, the following year.
He directed the film adaptation of the popular French children’s book Le petit Nicolas in 2009 and its sequel Nicholas on Holiday in 2014.
